What are NSAIDs?
NSAIDs or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs are pain relievers that millions of Americans take every day. Familiar products such as Advil are used for both chronic pain such as sore joints and acute pain such as an occasional headache. Since this is a type of product that's use is so widespread, its best to understand it.
NSAIDs are COX inhibitors which means that they stop the actions of the COX enzymes. This is beneficial in terms of pain relief because the COX enzymes play a large role in the body in the production of eicosanoids. This is a class of compounds in the body that produces pain and inflammation causing the misery we feel and so badly want to alleviate.
NSAIDs for the most part do their job well and are easily accessible over the counter. Fast pain relief is often experienced by most people and the convenience of driving down to a local convenient store or by simply asking a friend since many people carry a bottle with them on their person. Even though usage of NSAID’s is safe, there are some potential side effects. They tend to cause vasoconstriction of the smaller blood vessels which might lead to stomach ulcers and kidney damage. Some of these side effect tends to occur with long term use. It's for this reason that prior to long term NSAID use for prescription NSAIDS, doctors will run blood work periodically throughout treatment to monitor the kidneys and the liver (since many drugs including NSAIDs are metabolized by the liver).
If you are on consistent NSAID therapy or are looking for a long-term pain relief, it's best to talk to your doctor to find the best options for your situation. Alternative pain relief modalities are available such as stem cell therapy where we help your body heal itself.
