An Introduction to Regenerative Orthopedics:

The concept of using precisely guided injections to regenerate damaged or degenerated joints, ligaments and tendons has actually been around for over 50 years and known as Prolotherapy. The prolo prefix stands for proliferation and it stands for the concept of creating proliferation of tendon and ligamentous tissue. Prolotherapy is the forerunner for what today we call Regenerative Orthopedics. Prolotherapists were highly skilled at palpation exams to find the damaged structures and inject them. The limitations of Prolotherapy is that we classically used dextrose solutions to stimulate healing and this worked for many musculoskeletal and orthopedic conditions but it was not a powerful enough stimulus for advanced degenerative conditions such as bone-on-bone Osteoarthritis. Also, in many cases, it would take six or eight sessions to get the results we were looking for.

What has changed is that with advances in technology we now have much more powerful healing agents to inject in the form of stem cells and Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) and stem cells. If injected correctly stem cells and PRP can have a very powerful regenerative effect and if we inject them correctly we have much more regenerative power to rebuild damaged or degenerated structures. It is now quite possible to rebuild cartilage in a worn down joint or more serious ligament and tendon injuries.

In our opinion, the best Regenerative Orthopedic approach is one that marries tried and true injection skills and techniques (from Prolotherapy) with the latest stem cell and PRP technology. This is precisely what we do at Fountain. Dr. Walter, our injection specialist, is a classically trained Prolotherapist with many years experience in evaluating patients and through a careful palpation exam, to know exactly where they need the injections and then inject those structures with precision and safety. As far as our stem cell technology, Helmut Makosch, Fountain’s stem cell scientist has had extensive experience in the field and has developed many proprietary protocols in the lab such that his stem cells and PRP are many fold more potent than commercially available kits that most dabblers in the field use.

At Fountain we feel that this blend of the art of orthopedic regenerative injections with the latest science of stem cell technology will optimize the results patients will get. If you have any further questions about the Fountain Advantage please do not hesitate to contact us
